Your deck is an investment that adds value to your home and provides a space for outdoor enjoyment. Here in Central New Jersey, our decks face hot humid summers, cold winters, and everything in between. Here’s how to keep yours in top condition.
1. Clean Your Deck Regularly
Sweep debris weekly and do a thorough cleaning at least twice a year — once in spring after winter damage and again in fall before the leaves pile up. Use a deck cleaner appropriate for your material — wood decks need different care than composite.
Pro tip: Always test cleaning solutions in a hidden area first. Many homeowners in Millstone and East Windsor have learned this the hard way with discolored boards.
2. Inspect for Damage
Walk your deck each spring looking for:
- Loose boards or railings
- Popped nails or screws
- Signs of rot or insect damage
- Cracks or splintering
Catching problems early prevents costly repairs later. Central NJ’s freeze-thaw cycles are particularly hard on deck fasteners.
3. Seal and Stain Wood Decks
Wood decks need resealing every 2-3 years. The water bead test tells you when it’s time: if water soaks in rather than beading up, you need to reseal.
The best time to seal in our area is late spring or early fall when temperatures are moderate and humidity is lower.
4. Check the Substructure
Don’t forget what’s underneath. Inspect:
- Ledger board attachment to your house
- Joists and posts for rot
- Hardware for corrosion
Post bases are particularly vulnerable in low-lying areas of Monroe Township and Cranbury where moisture accumulates.
5. Trim Surrounding Vegetation
Keep plants and shrubs trimmed back from your deck. Vegetation holds moisture against the wood and can accelerate decay — a common issue with the lush landscaping we have here in Central Jersey.
