Project Overview
This Millstone homeowner wanted to maximize their backyard with a deck that could handle large family gatherings while still feeling intimate for everyday use.
The Challenge
The yard had a significant slope from the house to the back property line. A single-level deck would either be too high at the back or require excessive stairs at the house.
Our Solution
We designed a two-level composite deck that works with the terrain:
- Upper level: 16x20 feet, accessible directly from the kitchen
- Lower level: 12x16 feet, steps down naturally with the yard
- Built-in bench seating along the upper level perimeter
- Cable railings for unobstructed views
- Integrated lighting in the stairs and railings
Materials
- Decking: Trex Transcend in Spiced Rum
- Framing: Pressure-treated lumber with steel post brackets
- Railings: Cable rail with aluminum posts
- Hardware: Stainless steel throughout
Result
The homeowners now have over 500 square feet of outdoor living space that flows naturally with their yard. The upper level serves as the main entertaining area while the lower level creates a quieter conversation space.
The project was completed in three weeks, fully permitted and inspected.
